Broadband News

The Atlantic Fibre Optic Cable and Irish Dark Fibre Network by PiPER C onsortium, have recently announced plans to deliver high-capacity from Belmullet for local and wider connection. The schedule is to be operational in 2013.

This announcement should be a major impact for Mayo and the early challenge is how best to maximise this opportunity. However broadband development must be a strategic rollout. We have dark fibre on the Westport rail line which could in theory provide effective broadband for Westport and Castlebar. The real cost and consideration is that very vital breakout cost in connection.

Effective broadband can be a very effective piece of infrastructure for education, existing and new generation business. It provides a basis to finally kill off the Mayo God help us mantra
