A nightclub owner friend recently remarked about a recent departure party of thirty young people from the local area. This appears to be an ongoing trend in the past number of weeks.
What does this loss mean to those remaining?
DEVELOPMENT 12
A new generation development strategy
Reduction of €15 Billion costs over four years, now extended to 2014. The target is to reduce debt-to-GDP ratio to 3 per cent. Consideration Borrowing, excluding the banks, was 11.9% of GDP for 2010. Conclusion: Reduced economic growth, business failures, increase in taxation and social welfare costs.
Summation: This is an apolitical conclusion based on facts already in the public domain. Much media and political focus will continue on the Eurozone development. Sadly there is little evidence of a (re)structured development plan in what is now very changed circumstances. Those who continue to gain solace in export growth still fail to grasp that trend is based on economic activity in client countries rather than domestic influences.

Allergan Pharmaceuticals Ireland recently announced the construction of a new biologics manufacturing facility to its plant in Westport. The company currently employs 900 in its Westport and Dublin operations. This announcement extends an additional 250 jobs to its workforce.
What is perhaps overlooked is that the Allegan success story in Westport was initially influenced by one local individual. The late Myles Staunton, played such a vital role in persuading Allergan, IDA and others to locate in Westport. Myles Staunton, waged nearly a one man campaign in his goal to achieve this success.
Jim Kiely and his team established THE standard that ensured that the Westport plant stood head and sholders above its peers. Pat O'Donnel, current managing director, and his team, continue to build on those very high standards with this, very welcome, recent announcement

Media continue to vie for that very special event in 2011. Yes, the Royal wedding had merit, as had the Royal vist. A later U.S President Obama visit reminded us of " is feidir linn" and should not be forgotten for its motive and message.
But what of November 18 in Dublin ?

The Atlantic Fibre Optic Cable and Irish Dark Fibre Network by PiPER C onsortium, have recently announced plans to deliver high-capacity from Belmullet for local and wider connection. The schedule is to be operational in 2013.
This announcement should be a major impact for Mayo and the early challenge is how best to maximise this opportunity. However broadband development must be a strategic rollout. We have dark fibre on the Westport rail line which could in theory provide effective broadband for Westport and Castlebar. The real cost and consideration is that very vital breakout cost in connection.
Effective broadband can be a very effective piece of infrastructure for education, existing and new generation business. It provides a basis to finally kill off the Mayo God help us mantra

360 DEGREE DEVELOPMENT
A Different Approach to Different Times
Ireland faces not one, but three, inter-related crises:
.A banking crisis with no short term solution
.An IMF, ECB, EU crisis with little short term clarity
.A growing unemployment crisis reaching, officially or otherwise, 500,000.
These issues cannot be tackled by conventional supports. Austerity measures restrict any big spend solutions. The logical step is to assemble all those with related resources.
360 Degree Development is an attempt to engage with public and private sector to drive the economy, to create an environment where confidence is restored. The second phase is to drive development from the bottom-up - a basis for a proven, cluster approach.
The target audience is the Micro business, those with export potential, the retail sector, those in startup mode and those private and public entities who would benefit from market relevant training.
While exports continue to survive and grow, there is some ambiguity. Exports exist due to demand in client countries, rather than any domestic activity.
The fundamentals of 360 are in place and development can continue, albeit at a much slower place.

Let Battle commence.
Taoiseach Enda Kenny entered the bear pit of EU politics in recent days. His mission to gain a better deal for Ireland.
The opinion from the balcony is that Ireland is in shark infested waters. Until recently, Europe has regarded Ireland as a Doughnut economy, nothing in the middle. The IMF/ECB team came to Ireland, not by invitation, but on instructions from German and French bondholders and banking institutions.

If Pride is a sin, there were a multitude of sinners in Mayo this week. Many listened to radio, watched television coverage, and there were those who migrated to Dublin for the occasion. Lest you be confused, the occasion marked the change of government. Of greater significance was the elevation of Enda Kenny as Taoiseach of Ireland. His speech was statesman like, offering comparisons to Obama and Kennedy. He also alluded to an honesty, hitherto missing in Irish politics.Enda has also emerged as a fighter, he has led his party back from the jaws of near defeat, defying his critics, to an historical majority While his head will be occupied with the very demanding challenges, his heart will remain in Mayo. In the hustle and bustle of the results, Enda made the obligatory visit to Dublin, but insisted on returning to Mayo to join local supporters. This tells much about the man and his priorities. He shared the victory with friends, families, party workers. The time has also come for newly appointed junior minister Michael Ring. Michael has the proven drive and tenacity to bring results in his new responability. He will continue to do us proud in what is a very demanding and challenging portfolio. Tourism is a critical economic driver in the West but has lacked the necessary support in the past. On behalf of the many sinners and very proud, may we wish the incoming government, An Taoiseach, Deputy Enda Kenny, Junior Minister Deputy Michael Ring, Deputy Michelle Mulhern, Deputy John O’Mahony, a very productive future.

A web presence is your shop window to the world. Decide on what level your business requires. A simple web page, complete with text, logo and business message makes sense. Care must be taken on the presentation and graphics. Ideally your web page should be similar to your business card and conventional signage.
